Gallery 239
Inspired by the old Gallery 239 at the Art Institute of Chicago. The paintings and sculptures have long been dispersed to other galleries or storage, but their memory lingers... somewhat. The titles have faded into the haze of the past, but I still recall the Hans Hofmann; the Rothko; the Clifford Styles, a massive black canvas that took up a wall; the Franz Klein and the Pollock. Two tall slender figures by Giacometti guarded the entrances. It was magical.

Beata Beatrix for Solo Cello

To Atthis
[ Atthis never more to see]
I desire rather to be dead.
Ah, she weeping to leave me.
And this she said to me.
What unhappiness,
Sappho, against my will I lose you,
And this to my love I replied,
Rejoice and go your way,
Remember that you were cared for
Recall how great our love and fair our suffering
The many garlands of violets and roses
braided round your soft throat...
Nyktos
This work came out of a night in the north woods. Surrounded by towering trees and almost perfectly still, the light and the forest took on a immensity that was astonishing.
